OM(usic)FG - Black Star
THEN, I discovered Black Star. I'm upset I hadn't known about them sooner. Black Star is made up of 2 hip hop greats, Talib Kweli and Mos Def (now Yasiin Bey). The duo originally came about in the early 1990s from the underground alternative rap movement. The helped shape the genre and even released a 1998 album called "Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star." Each artist went on to have successful solo careers, and gained much recognition. A second Black Star alubm had been rumored for years, and finally on October 5, 2011, they performed their new single "Fix Up" on the Colbert Report.
Black Star recently played Bonaroo, and I'm completely jealous of anyone who was able to witness this. Hopefully a new album will follow. These guys know what they're doing. Talib and Yasiin, keep on keepin' on. I love it.

The Daniels Brothers Band, GWC, and Crane this Saturday!
This Saturday night (June 30) at Sweetwater Live in Duluth, the biggest party of the summer is about to go down. What do you get when you mix 3 of Atlanta's favorite local bands? A big freakin' throwdown! The Daniels Brothers Band, Crane are all on the line up and I cannot wait!
The Daniels Brothers Band will be releasing their highly anticipated EP at this show, and in case you missed them on Armada FM yesterday, just be prepared for some blow your mind good music!! They worked with Atlanta's super star producer Mike Froedge and what they have created is nothing short of genius. The band is super excited to finally release their EP, and it's guaranteed to be a great show. Put on your dancing shoes! It will be a full band show, and for those of you who haven't seen them with a full band, you're missing out. They will have 20 free EPs to give out to the first 20 people through the doors, so GET THERE EARLY! After those 20 are gone, EPs are only $5, so grab one while you can!
GWC always puts on a great live show. Since it's a hometown show for them, their fans will be out in full force! These guys have been a band since they were in high school & have grown so much musically. GWC was recently nominated for Best Rock Band at the Georgia Music Awards, and the guys really enjoyed that experience. They have been working on some new material and are excited about hitting the road with their new tunes. We'll surely hear some of these Saturday!
Crane is an Atlanta favorite and they have been touring all over the Southeast. Lead singer Anthony has a soulful voice and the band pulls influences from many different genres such as southern rock, blues, hip hop and funk. The band is currently working on a new record and will hopefully be releasing songs this summer.
It's an incredible line up and you won't want to miss any of these bands. The show is guaranteed to rock your face, and it will be packed out!! Doors at 8:00, $5 for 21+, $10 for 18-20. Come have a beer or 2 or 3 with me!

Saint Baldrick's - My friend shaves her head for cancer research
Sure we all remember when Britney went crazy & shaved her head...because she went crazy. WELL my good friend Lindsey is shaving her head on MARCH 16th for a much better reason. Each year in cities all over the US, participants raise money and shave their heads for childhood cancer research. The participants are 90% guys (easy for them, right?), and then there are the brave handful of females.
I've know Lindsey for about 7 years, and I know how much her hair means to her. Lindsey loves her long hair, whether curly or straight, but after so many people, friends and family, were affected by cancer in some way, she decided to jump on the opportunity. Her goal is $300, but I want to help her way surpass this goal. The link below will take you directly to Lindsey's donation page:
Every amount helps, whether $5 or $100, every bit helps. ALSO, author Marley Gibson has graciously offered a copy of her book Radiate to the top 3 donation givers. Radiate is about a young girl who finds out that she has cancer, it shows her fears, struggles and how she fights to overcome them.
I've already donated. It's easy to do, and St. Baldricks is a BBB accredited charity, so you know your money is going to the right place. Thanks for any donations you can get. I appreciate it, and I know Lindsey does.

GWC, The Daniels Bros, and In It For the Chicks at Peachtree Tavern
Welcome the weekend with an insane lineup at Peachtree Tavern in Buckhead! Tonight, 3 of Atlanta's most awesome bands will be hitting the stage to rock your face! Greedy White Citizens are back in Atlanta for the first time since last summer and are bringing new music tonight for your listening pleasure. After attending plenty of GWC shows in Atlanta, I can tell you this is one party you don't want to miss!
The Daniels Brothers are no stranger to the Atlanta scene. The brothers, from Atlanta, were raised on Southern Rock music and are influenced by classic rock and alternative. They've built up a substaintial fan base by playing many bars across the South, including Atlanta area bars: Ri Ra, Dive Bar Buckhead, McCray's, and The Big Ketch.

In It for the Chicks is a 2 piece rock and roll band from Alanta. If you've never seen these guys, you're missing out! Even though it's only 2 guys, they put on one of the most high energy shows I've ever seen. These guys have also played many venues in Atlanta such as Tin Roof, East Side Lounge, and Peachtree Tavern.
Show is TONIGHT! Peachtree Tavern in Buckhead. 21+ show. $10 in adv/prob. $12 at the door. That's a great price for a lot of AWESOME!
Hope to see you there! I'll be hanging out, ringing in my weekend! Oh yeah!

Toyota's Awesome Fun-Vii concept car
Have you ever wished your car could change to fit your mood? Wanted to tell that person who cut you off or is riding your tail EXACTLY how you feel? Well, Toyota's new concept car, the Fun-Vii, will allow you to do just that! You would be able to create custom graphics on the exterior AND the interior display and change them with a simple tap of an app.
Toyota envisions the car as a fully interactive car that is connected to the Internet and a mobile network of other vehicles. Besides just being an awesome and fun car, the the Fun-Vii will alert the driver to potential road hazards such as a car in the blind spot or cars ahead making emergency stops.
The car features would be controlled by a smartphone or tablet app, so changes could be made inside or outside of the car. Pretty neat, huh? Until you accidentally tweet naked pictures to your car's exterior....oh my.

Video screenshot by Amanda Kooser/CNET
If you're ever in Odenville, AL and craving some meat... from convenience store, Lil Mart has got you covered. This meat vending machine is a pilot product from a new company called Smart Butcher. They hope to start expanding to campground and state parks. The machine accepts $1 bills, $5 bills, and credit/debit cards. It offers a wide variety such as pork steaks, sirloin, ribeye, sausages, etc.
Want an 8 ounce cut of sirloin? That will only cost you $3.99! You are able to inspect the meat before paying. Each neat meat is individually sealed and refrigerated so it's safe for dinner. Who would have thought you could get some gas AND dinner at the gas station??

OM(usic)FG – Madonna set to play Super Bowl Halftime show
Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage
It’s not too hard to follow up the horrendous Black Eyed Peas' 2011 halftime show, but let’s hope Madonna’s still got the panache to carry out the performance. With a new tour and album on the horizon for 2012, Madonna will give us a sneak peek of some new material during the upcoming halftime show. It is speculated that she will perform the first new single “Give Me All Your Love” which features Nicki Minaj and MIA (who may perform with the pop diva!)
The Super Bowl will take place on February 5th in Indianapolis.

Dwight Yoakam and Tyler Reeve at Wild Bill’s – 12/3/11
TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT! Legendary country musician Dwight Yoakam will be hitting the stage at Wild Bill’s in Duluth. He has recorded over 21 albums, racked up over 30 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts and has sold an impressive 25 million records. His 1986 debut LP Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. launched his career, and he has been enjoying a incredible ride since then.
Country greats such as Johnny Cash and Chris Isaak have acknowledged Yoakam’s talent and creativity. His song Honky Tonk Man was the first country song ever played on MTV. Yoakam hasn’t always stuck solely to the “country music” genre and has covered many different songs from rock & roll, punk, and the blues. In 2011, he recorded a duet with pop starlet Michelle Branch. The song called Long Goodby” was available as a free download on Branch’s website.
Also appearing is Atlanta’s own Tyler Reeve. He draws influence from the “good ‘ol country” such as Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr, and Waylon Jennings. Reeve and his band always put on a full of energy, great show and will be a perfect combination with Yoakam. Reeve’s toured with many national country acts like Montgomery Gentry, Jamey Johnson, Little Big Town, Eric Church, Jack Ingram, and Eli Young Band. Go find him on Facebook and “LIKE” him!
Tyler Reeve plays from 9 - 10pm, and Dwight Yoakam goes on at 10:30. Tickets are $30 general admission / $40 at door general admission or $60 per seat at a table of 4. Wild Bill’s is a great venue, and you get your money’s worth in great performances.

Talib Kweli, Ahmed Soultan and others - "People Power"

Warner Records & http://www.yannicklecontestudio.com/
A great new project out of Africa has created a song to support the climate movement there. In the past 16 years, there has been no action from the United Nations climate talks, and the people are getting frustrated. Enter a group of musicians from throughout Africa and around the world created a “theme song.” The song was written to tell the truth about how the climate change is affecting Africa and also in the hope of inspiring more people to join in the cause and make the future better for everyone.
The song is called “People Power” feat Talib Kweli, Zap Mama, Angelique Kidjo, Ahmed Soultan, Zolani Mahola (From the group who did the world cup song Waka Waka with Shakira: Freshlyground ) and Jabulani Tsambo. You may recognize a few of these names: Talib Kweli has collaborated with many American rap/hip hop/R & B artists such as Kanye West, Common, Mary J. Blige, and Faith Evans. We also featured Ahmed Soultan in a Sept. 2009 (Ahmed Soultan - Taste of Music in Morocco) after I heard him on the radio while visiting Morocco.
While the song isn’t available in the US on iTunes, you can listen to a soundcloud version of it. **CLICK HERE**
Some of it IS in English, so don’t worry. It’s a great jam & hopefully draws a lot of attention to this cause.

Got Hanson Beer?
Yep, it’s true. Those shaggy haired boys from the late 90’s are going into a new line of work. Hanson’s all grown up now and creating their own brand of beer playfully named “Mmmhop” inspired by their 1997 hit “Mmmbop.” The guys (Isaac, 31, Taylor, 28, and Zac, 26) announced the new venture on Monday and they’re hoping the fans dig it. Zac says “It’s vital our fans have trust in everything Hanson do. We are soon going to be selling our own beer. I’m not joking – Mmmhop IPA anyone?” The beer expected to hit shelves early next year will be an Indian pale ale. Bottoms up!

OMFG(ossip) - Frankie Muniz is engaged!
Amy Graves/WireImage
Former child star of Fox’s “Malcom in the Middle” is engaged to his girlfriend of 4 years, Elycia Marie Turnbow. Frankie and Marie will wed in six months, and will have many celebrity guests such as the Jonas Brothers and most likely Hanson (not confirmed, but makes my inner 14 year old self squeal).
According to “US Magazine,” the couple allegedly had a “falling out” which involved a 911 call and police back in February that both sides have denied. Apparently she was just trashing his stuff. Oh well, we wish the couple the best of luck!
Now, here’s a video inspired by most of Malcolm’s girlfriends throughout the years!
And then my favorite scene of all times from the Malcolm in the Middle series.

Eric Dodd, Scotty Cram, David Bell at Smith’s - 3/12/11
This Saturday night (3/12/11), three GREAT musicians are taking over the Atlanta Room at Smith’s Olde Bar (www.smithsoldebar.com). Eric Dodd is a native of Lake Oconee and has shared the stage many times with Grammy award winner Zac Brown. Scotty Cram lives in Atlanta and says his influences are “Motown, Soul, Rock, all wrapped into one,” and that’s exactly what his sound is. He has a great, soulful voice that grabs your attention, and his passion for his music really shows. (p.s. – He sings a wicked cover of “Man in the Mirror.” How can you not love him?) David Bell is also a local musician who will complete this great lineup.
ALSO, it’s my awesome roommate’s BIRTHDAY! Come out and celebrate with us! She’s a loyal OMFG reader, supporter, and helper. We <3 her! Presents not necessary, but free drinks greatly appreciated!
Find us in the Atlanta Room, Saturday, 8:00pm, $8 (21 and up).

OM(usic)FG - Wesley Cook at The Vinyl - Feb 17
Wanna get “leid?” We can help with that. Fresh off a win at Hard Rock’s battle of the bands, Wesley Cook is bringing his full band to the Vinyl’s stage for a great show that is not to be missed!

Click on flyer for Facebook event page
Wesley started off with a solo acoustic album in 2005 and has come a long way since then. His most recent full-band album has a laid back, pop/beachy (is that even a category?) sound. Cue my Van Morrison reference and add some of O.A.R.’s bold, high-energy sound, and you’ve got Wesley Cook. He puts so much of his personality into each song, and you feel like you know exactly what he's singing about.
He has shared the stage with many great artists such as Drivin’ n’ Cryin, Zac Brown Band and Manchester Orchestra. In 2006, he was nominated for “Soloist of the year” in the Athens Music Awards, and he has appeared on MTV2 as an “Artist on the Rise.”
Some of my favorites from the cd are: Tasty Devil Woman, Home Grown Girl, and Sunrise Over Georgia. You can check out the cd New Ground at CDBaby.com, or click the picture below:

You can hear Wesley LIVE tomorrow night at Vinyl! Also on the bill: Christopher Alan Yates, and Patrick Scott. Doors at 7:30, $10 at the door. That's a bargain for some great music, plus you get a LEI! Just do it!
Here’s a video from Wesley’s 7/21/10 show at Hard Rock Café. Always a very enjoyable show!

Dr. Dre set to drop "Detox" finally?
FINALLY! Maybe? Who knows? Dr. Dre says he’s ready to release Detox, an album his fans have been waiting a LONG time for. Dr. Dre’s last cd 2001, which was released in November 1999, debuted at number 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold an incredible 516,000 copies in its first week.
Detox was originally scheduled to be released in 2004, but Dre kept delaying the release in order to work with other artists. Now another release date has been set, but take it as you will, the release date is April 1, 2011. A hoax? I hope not. Potential tracks have been “leaked” all through out 2010 (Kush, I Need a Doctor, Under Pressure), and Kush, which peaked in the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, was officially released on iTunes on November 18, 2010.
Trying to repeat the success of 2001, Dre has brought in many guest appearances on Detox including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Akon, Jay-Z, Game, and La Roux. There are rumored guest appearances by Ice Cube, Lady Gaga, Ashanti, Busta Rhymes, T.I., Pharrell, and many others.
Dr. Dre is set to perform with Eminem at the Grammy Awards this coming Sunday (2/13/2011) in his first television performance in over a decade….hopefully an effort to promote the new album. Whether or not we’ll actually get a new Dr. Dre cd in April is unknown, but I’m really looking forward to this performance.
As one YouTube commenter says:
"Damn, I love Dre, but I've been waiting patiently forever for Detox to come out. If I had a buck for every time Detox has been delayed, I'd be able afford a pair of Dre's overpriced headphones."
Well hopefully, my friend, you won't have to wait for long.
Check out “Kush” by Dr. Dre!
