Sub Swara - Triggers

About a month ago we brought you the Sub Swara remix of Shutterbug. And about two weeks ago Sub Swara dropped their second album 'Triggers'. I did give you a widget to grab one of their tracks free after signing up on their email list, but now they've dropped us Bend You and Steam as 320kbps giveaway  tracks!

Sub Swara creates, constructs, produces and plays genrebending bass music that parallels the diversity of their home town of Brooklyn, NY. Consisting of Dhruva and Dave Sharma, Sub Swara's musical genome brings together a wide assortment of DNA - from dub to hip-hop, dancehall to punk rock, and all the global sounds in between. Sub Swara combines electronic production, live instrumentation, and 3000% of recommended energy levels to bring to life an inclusive, human experience that creates an inviting space for anyone and everyone.

Sub Swara's second album, Triggers (out on Low Motion Records), continues the group's exploration and blending of different spaces in bass music and draws from a completely unique sound pallete that marries both live (much of the percussion is actually played by the group in addition to other instruments by guest artists) and electronic elements. The aesthetic is not tied to any single genre. It traverses through dubstep, hip hop, and sounds yet to be classified, binding these elements together with a strong melodic center, dancefloor energy and inventive production.

The album features collaborations with Dead Prez Lyrics Born, Kendra Foster of Parliament Funkadelic and the up and coming hip hop act, Freddie Mills. The instrumental collaborations feature the afrobeat horns of Antibalas and a host of master session musicians from around the world.

Here's an extra treat, a 44min, 320kbps mix of tracks off the album mixed by Sub Swara

Beautiful Bells - Managing Depth

Another very interesting artist. I'd have to say his sound is mostly chill, downtempo, sometimes hip hop rhythms, sometimes abstract rhythms and lots of samples and effects.

Beautiful Bells is the Alabama-born Justin Peake, who now splits his time between New Orleans and Brooklyn. While primarily a drummer, music has always been at the center of Peake's life, starting with the violin at age 4, and later the piano at age 6, learning drums and guitar in his early teens, Justin's family history is deeply rooted in Jazz. With a broad and eclectic array of musical influences, citing names like Iannis Xenakis, J Dilla, Fela Kuti, Bill Evans, Autechre, John Cage, and many in between, harmonious complexity is the fuel behind many of Justin's multifaceted works.

With more concern regarding the true expression of a musical vision, Peake states that "I don't want to say something musically or artistically that's already been said because...well, it's already been said. The next record will be different. And the one after that will be different too, and on and on. I'm coming at electronic music [based on] what feels good to me." As Beautiful Bells, his forward-thinking beats wax future jazz with ample helpings of homemade samples and improvised melodies, fusing them with synths, as well as instruments both digital and analog. Perhaps it is best summed up by examining the meaning of the name Beautiful Bells-- the root "bell" is used in many languages in the word "beautiful," while the ringing of bells produces some of the most physically complex tones that we observe in the world. "Funny that our word for the most complex of tones means 'beautiful.'" - Moodgadget

OMF(ood)G- Simply Delicious - Uncle Julio's!

Hi there! I have been on a trip or two lately and so I haven’t shared any good local places to eat in a while. Well, today a group went to Uncle Julio’s Rio Grande Café or Casa Grande on Peachtree St. for lunch. For starts we got 2 large orders of guacamole to go with their famous thin chips and salsa! It was mighty tasty!!! I had their steak quesadillas and the others ordered tacos, tortilla soup and salad, and fajitas. We all were stuffed and happy by the time the meal was complete.
The one bad thing was we had to go back to work so that meant no margaritas! Oh DARN! They have some of the best Mexican food in town in my opinion. If you have not already eaten there I recommend you give it a try. Try their Swirl:

The Chemicals Brothers - Hey Boy, Hey Girl (DivKid Organic LadyBoy Remix)

DivKid take their skills to a classic. This is a solid remix. I really like the wonky bassline they dropped in there. Otherwise it's an easy song to remix and that's why most of them sound the same, but DivKid makes a quality rework here with a slightly darker progressive sound. The video isn't their best overall, but the dancing skeletons and the skeleton DJ made me smile.

Tricky - Mixed Race

Tricky, the man behind some of the most famous lyrics in early trip hop, has a new album out. Most people probably remember hearing Tricky's vocals on Massive Attack's Blue Lines. He worked with Massive Attack on that album as well as wrote some of the lyrics for Protection, at the same time his debut album Maxinquaye was receiving huge acclaim in the UK.

Personally, it was 1997's Pre-Millenium Tension that introduced me to Tricky as a solo artist. "Makes Me Wanna Die" featuring the vocals of Martina Topley-Bird was one of those songs that stuck me deep from the first time I heard it and became a treasure hunt to regain that sense memory later in life.

The new album Mixed Race (available at Amazon) is definitely a mix of all the different influences Tricky has channeled throughout his career. Blues, trip-hop, jazz, reggae, and dance are all present on this album. Featured is a track called Kingston Logic (sometimes listed as UK Jamaican) which is actually a really kool collaboration of Daft Punk, Tricky, and a couple of other artists. I'm not sure if Terry Lynn was a part of this production. Murder Weapon was the first single put out from this album. Using the familiar Peter Gunn guitar riff, it's a catchy sound but otherwise not my choice for a featured track.

The lead song, Every Day is a heavily blues infused trip hop song which will quickly get stuck in your head. Ghetto Stars is more the dark, punk electro trip hop style I loved from Pre-Millenium Tension. Time To Dance is a really interesting track simply because it sounds a lot like some of the chill-wave we hear these days from acts like Miami Horror. Early Bird is classic jazzy Tricky with his signature voice crawling all over and under your skin.

Jimmy Vallance - Put The Kettle On

A gorgeous track from Jimmy Vallance. Something I could definitely find myself listening to on a Sunday morning as I put the kettle on to make some tea. Yes, I drink tea and not coffee. Not all Americans drink coffee ya know. Besides, this song just feels more like tea time.

Playing For Change

"The Inspiration

Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and unite us as one human race. And with this truth firmly fixed in our minds, we set out to share it with the world.

The Production

We built a mobile recording studio, equipped with all the same equipment used in the best studios, and traveled to wherever the music took us. As technology changed, our power demands were downsized from golf cart batteries to car batteries, and finally to laptops. Similarly, the quality with which we were able to film and document the project was gradually upgraded from a variety of formats-- each the best we could attain at the time—finally to full HD.

One thing that never changed throughout the process was our commitment to create an environment for the musicians in which they could create freely and that placed no barriers between them and those who would eventually experience their music. By leading with that energy and intent everywhere we traveled, we were freely given access to musicians and locations that are usually inaccessible. In this respect, the inspiration that originally set us on this path became a co-creator of the project along with us!

The Effect

Over the course of this project, we decided it was not enough for our crew just to record and share this music with the world; we wanted to create a way to give back to the musicians and their communities that had shared so much with us. And so in 2007 we created the Playing for Change Foundation, a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation whose mission is to do just that. In early 2008, we established Timeless Media, a for-profit entity that funds and extends the work of Playing for Change. Later that year, Timeless Media entered into a joint venture with the Concord Music Group through the support of label co-owner and entertainment legend Norman Lear and Concord Music Group executive vice president of A&R John Burk. Our goal is to bring PFC’s music, videos and message to the widest possible audience.

Now, musicians from all over the world are brought together to perform benefit concerts that build music and art schools in communities that are in need of inspiration and hope. In addition to benefit concerts, the Playing for Change band also performs shows around the world. When audiences see and hear musicians who have traveled thousands of miles from their homes, united in purpose and chorus on one stage, everyone is touched by music's unifying power.

And now, everyone can participate in this transformative experience by joining the Playing for Change Movement. People are hosting screenings, musicians are holding benefit concerts of every size, fans are spreading the message of Playing for Change through our media, and this is only the beginning. Together, we will connect the world through music!"

The latest release from Black Diamond Bay who have delivered Peace, a violent and graceful composition, combining the dirty energy of drum and bass with the raw beauty of a string section. Motivated by lyrical anarchy this song seeks to start a dialogue, a conversation to be expanded upon.

Peace is only available for purchase on iTunes, and it is highly worth buying.
