OM(au5step)FG - Deadmau5

Joel, aka deadmau5, has been posting up some samples of some dubstep tracks he's working on right now. If a progressive electro heavy hitter can win over fans with his take on a new genre for him, then it's gotta be worth checking out: Check out his soundcloud for more sample of his recent dubstep work

Bonnaroo 2010 Lineup

In my opinion: Well the lineup is up and it's what you'd expect: the biggest bands around in mainstream counter-culture (contradiction) at it's 21st century finest. While last year signaled the final milkings of the hippy-hipster compromise with Phish and MGMT, this year presents itself as unabashedly utilitarian in its selection of artists. The headliners are Dave Mathews Band (undeniably the alt-rock king of radio/t-shirts/tours in the 90's), Kings of Leon (way too popular for the actual quality of their musicianship), Tenacious D (even I don't have the guts to criticize the comic duo), Jay-Z (for those who still believe he raps artistic rebellion), and Stevie Wonder (who, though more familiar to past generations, continues to rage a wailing good show).

In this vein, Bonnaroo, maintains its stance as The Great American Summer Festival, appealing to well pretty much everybody. However, with these headliners, it seems that it has taken this stance to a more definite extreme this year. There's just nothing questionable or remotely scene-specific in the headliners. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It just kind of resembles that awkward feeling of finding out that the band you've been listening to religiously for the past two years is also a personal favorite of that douchebag in accounting.

So make no mistake, the people will gather accordingly, not in huddled masses of wookie dreads or of skinny arms still clutching half-drunk PBR cans, but in the generic America of well like 1996.

With that being said, the diversity of the acts as a whole remains astounding; here are my personal favorites on this year's list thus far (if I hate you please just keep our mutual appreciation to yourself:
Flaming Lips, Jimmy Cliff, LCD Soundsystem, Avett Brothers, Thievery Corporation, the National, John Prine, She and Him, the Black Keys, Deadmau5, Blitzen Trapper, Bassnectar, MM&W, Calexico, Edwarde Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, They Might Be Giants, Brandi Carlile, and the XX.
Damn... there goes all my rationalizations to not shuffle out $250 for a ticket and a weekend of sleeplessness in the middle of a dusty-Tennessee-summer-field.

Hot Mess - New E.P. and Mix Tape

Wow, I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am that OMFG is still growing. It seems that with every week comes something new that makes me appreciate this blog more and more. This post is a testament of that. We are getting new music sent to us all the time now, and I love sharing it with you. It's like when you used to go out and buy new CD's and more than half of the experience was being the first kid on your block to have it. So, without further delay, I present to you, HOT MESS

Hot Mess does a great job of mixing Electro and Dubstep. It only seems logical considering the evolution of dance music lately. Forget about me, Let's get to the goods.
First up is a track called Dip!

"Doughnuts..are the street thug of the pastry world.."

Yesterday my friend and I went to Sublime Doughnuts for the first time! Let me just say these were the best Doughnuts I've ever had!
Located on:
535 10th Street NW
Atl, GA 30318
(near GA Tech Campus)
404-897-1801
6am-6pm.

The doughnuts are handmade and aren't your typical Doughnut flavors, we tried the A-Town Mocha and S'mores Doughnut! I would have loved to try them all but these two were definatly a great pick! I can't wait to go back and try more, not to mention I will be keeping these in mind for birthday presents and gifts!

"The A-Town Cream doughnut is filled with silky custard and topped with Belgian Callebaut Dark Chocolate, this 'A' Doughnut is on it's way to becoming Atlanta's new signature sweet!"
Quotes the website, and I couldn't agree more!

These Doughnuts were even featured in the NY Times, apparently thats where the Chef Kamal Grant got his start, and he came across a vacant doughnut shop on 10th, and since then his doughnuts have been flying off the shelves! He really knows what he is doing and his been written up multiple times in newspapers in Atlanta.

I know us Atlantans love our Krispy Kreme, but I definatly recommend giving it a try!

YUM!

Nikki Sixx and Kat Von D split

"Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx and tattoo artist Kat Von D have split after dating two years. Nikki Sixx, 51, has confirmed the end of his relationship w ith LA Ink star Kat Von D, 27."

“I want to wish Katherine nothing but the best in her life,” Sixx writes on his MySpace page. “She has loved and inspired the hell outta me and I know I have done the same for her in these almost two years we ruled the earth together. “We are taking a break from our relationship for reasons that we will choose to keep personal. You won’t find me saying a bad word about her and I don’t believe vice versa. We have too much wonderful history together to ever deface that.”

This is not surprising to me since I am reading Motley Crue's "The Dirt" book.  Nikki isn't a one girl type of guy.  Too bad, they were a cute couple.

OM(usic)FG - Mux Mool

A self-confessed nerd? A genius if you ask me. Brian Lindgren aka Mux Mool is preparing to release his first full length album "Skulltaste" March 23rd on Ghostly International. Adult Swim fans might remember his track "Night Court" which appeared on Ghostly Swim in 2007. He's been doing his thing while criss-crossing the US by himself for years. Now he's ready to release what Ghostly calls "a masterpiece of eclectic cohesion: chunky instrumental hip-hop sits next to new-wave anthems and dubby dancefloor bangers, which abut skittery slices of D’nB and made-up video-game soundtracks".

I highly suggest you visit Ghostly for more Mux, including a free EP download. I'm lovin the Death 9000 track.

What has Jessica Simpson learned about past relationships? NOTHING.

"Jessica Simpson: I learned 'nothing' from past relationships with Nick Lachey, John Mayer, Tony Romo.
Despite rumors she was dating Smashing Pumpkins rocker Billy Corgan, Jessica Simpson says she is single."

Look for her in the March issue of Allure Magazine.

OMFG(uest Contrib) - The REAL Jersey Shore/Seaside Heights

The 2009 TV series “Jersey Shore” has rekindled memories for a lot of us.  More remarkably, it has captured the interest of a nationwide audience previously unaware of the Jersey Shore.  If you supposed going “down the shore” is a new phenomenon, take 10 minutes to watch this video.  Rediscovered by accident, this promotional film highlights Seaside Heights, New Jersey in the year 1960.  Yes, you read that right – 1960.  Not surprisingly, what you’ll see contrasts sharply with the shore attractions of today.  You’ll have a few giggles but still be able to appreciate the less complicated times and simpler pleasures captured on film.  Anyone of a certain age, who has had this kind of summer experience, will tell you that the best food, the best beach, and the best boardwalk haven’t changed all that much over the years.  Sure, there’s a little more glitz and glam but the energy is ageless.  And don’t be fooled by those conservative bathing suits in the video, “hooking up” isn’t a new invention either.  Most summer romances don’t make it past Labor Day but a summer at the Jersey Shore stays with you forever.  Enjoy!

OM(usic)FG - XI

Immerse Records of out Bristol, England is a new project from our friends at Low Life Inc. Deep, heavy dubs with a lot of atmosphere is what Immerse seems to be all about. Which I love. It really helps you see what Emalkay was talking about in the video I posted the other day (refering to the US vs. UK dubstep scenes). These are sweet heavy bass lines and I'd def use '000' as a nice building track or even a late nite drop to bring the crowd back down for a minute.

OMF(ashion)G: Betsey Johnson makes me hot

Okay OMFGers...

I have an addiction I have been struggling with for the past few years, but has definitely become more prominent in the past year or so, and that addiction is to anything and everything Betsey Johnson! Who is she, you ask? Betsey Johnson is a fashion designer who has been on the scene for well over 40 years. She is mostly known for her brightly colored, adorned, often brightly colored, over-the-top fashions.  Celebs love her crazy, kitschy style too! Check Rhianna and Lil’ Mama rockin’ a hot pink and black tulle number by the eclectic designer:

And check it out…this is the exciting part. ANYONE can afford to look beautiful in Betsey! And I do mean anyone. Prices in her boutiques (the two in Atlanta are in Perimeter Mall and Lenox Mall) are pretty high. Most dresses full price range in the $275-$500 area.  Though lately she has been running some amazing sales!  Last month I scored a coat that was $350 retail, but had been marked down several times to $120! I seriously live in that thing with this crazy cold weather. Not only that, but her jewelry, sunglasses, socks, stockings, wallets, and purses can be found at discount retailers everywhere (places like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc.) You can also go on auction sites (eBay, etsy) and nab some amazing deals. Among some other Betsey swag, I received a FANTASTIC pair of her sunglasses for Christmas. My parents just HAD to tell me how much they paid for them…$3. Yes. Three. American. Dollars. See, for less than the price of a value meal you can be high stylin’ in some beautiful Betsey Johnson goodies! Here is miss Betsey herself showing off some of her own designs:

And just for fun…me decked out in my most prized possession: my sparkly, sequin-skirted, hot pink Betsey Johnson prom dress at the Revolver Magazine Golden Gods Awards last year, escorted by my dear friend/Daath guitarist Eyal Levi:

Now ladies and cross-dressers, go forth, shop frugally (we are in a recession, ya know,) and be fabulous!

Self Music #3

For this installment of Self Music, I'm going to be hooking you up with a rare E.P. that came out back in 1998. Yeah, lets go old school with this one! It's a collection of songs that did not make it onto the Breakfast With Girls album and was to serve as a teaser due to a delay of its release. These are really strong tracks. Some consider this E.P. to be a great little collection of songs. Especially Flip Top Box. I hope you like it as much as I do!

OM(usic) - The Loops Of Fury

You might remember The Loops Of Fury from a certain Flick a Switch promo mix they did last summer. I know I played the hell out of it. I didn't realize at the time that they were still relatively unknown and gearing up for a 'rebirth'.

You see, James Wall and Maximillion Clarke used to known as Hyperion and they had been rocking crowds in Brisbane since at least 2006 (thats just as far back as I can tell) under that name with lots of support from the industry. U&A Recordings owner Simon Shackleton aka Elite Force, met the two in Brisbane and then asked them to play a live set at MoonBar in April 2009. Check the video
This was thier last live performance as Hyperion. James and Max have resurfaced this year with U&A's first full release as The Loops Of Fury, the SOAP EP. The original is a mad, bouncing, electro house builder. This layering and pushing the envelope is taken straight from the energy of their live performances (I've never seen them and even I can tell you that!). I'm really diggin the Peo De Pitte breaks mix too, he's definitely someone to keep an eye on as well. Get the whole EP over on beatport.

UPDATE: This just in... Mr. Shackelton just sent us this 30 min mix the boys did to promote the SOAP release:

Preview: The Gift (Michael Woods Remix) - Way Out West

When I read that on March 15th, Deconstruction is releasing an EP of 'The Gift' by Way Out West 2010 remixes, I had to start pulling out the vinyl. I found my original 1996 release of 'The Gift' and of course couldn't stop there. Anyone wanna do an old skool progressive party?

"Kicking off the package is Way Out West’s own 2010 remix. Toughening up the original break based drums and adding a few new synth lines is all WOW needed to do to breath a second life in their ubiquitous track.
Gui Boratto’s remix takes the track into deep tech house territory.  Gui flips the track to a straight 4/4 beat, adding some organic percussion, side chained chords and his trademark warm distorted synths to create a truly euphoric groove.
Coming straight off the back of his to 2 remixes for the mighty deadmau5 (his last being Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune) Michael Woods aims straight for the main room.  Stabbing synths, rolling bass lines and a huge breakdown guarantee hands will most definitely be head for the air.
Hospital Records current golden boy Logistics turns out a liquid D’n’B roller, perfectly juxtaposing narly modulating bass and clattering drums with the beautiful pads and chords of the original.
Finally to round off the package, new comers Tek-One give us a Dubstep version with a difference, using circuit bent toys to make their basslines and synth sounds, they create something completely unique to them.
Killer remixes for every genre, but what else would you expect from Decon?"(source: risingdigital.co.uk)

OM(usic)FG - Chemical Brothers 1st live show in 18 months

I love these emails. Helps me escape my day for a minute while I imagine actually flying to London and attending this show. One day Ed & Tom, one day...
"The Chemical Brothers are set to play their first gigs in nearly eighteen months with the announcement of two headline shows at London's Roundhouse (May 20th and 21st) and a Saturday night headline gig at Sonar in Barcelona (June 19th). Roundhouse tickets are on sale on Friday 12th at 9AM.
The Chemical Brothers return to the Roundhouse will be the latest in a long line of heroic shows, from playing to the largest crowd at Glastonbury ever assembled (2000), a historic sell out show at London's Olympia (2008) and in 2007 becoming the first electronic act ever to play Trafalgar Square, Tom & Ed's live shows have never been anything less than staggering. This time around, with the promise of something very special up their collective sleeve, get ready for The Chemical Brothers' most incredible gigs yet. We'll have more news soon for 2010 - so be sure you're connected and following us by visiting us below" (source:thechemicalbrothers.com)
